Tour Information

All tour reservations and questions are handled online through the PTA. Please do not call the school as our secretaries will not be able to sign you up for a tour or answer tour-related questions.

Tour dates depend on the children’s schedule, and we won’t know the fall schedule until mid-August. We ask that you please check the website September 1, when we will have a better idea of the day we can post registration access. Our volunteers thank you for your patience and understanding! They can be reached at tours@alvaradoschool.net.

Thursday, Aug. 28, is Back-to-School Night for the Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes. Meet in your child’s classroom from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Adults only, please; no childcare provided.

Back-to-School Night for Grades 1 to 5

Thursday, Sept. 11, is Back-to-School Night. Look for more information in the weekly newsletter.

Work Day is Near

Saturday, Sept. 27, is the Alvarado Work Day, when parents gather at the school to clean, fix, build and otherwise physically support the school. Food served, and children welcome! To help, please contact work_day@alvaradoschool.net. Look for more information in the weekly newsletter.

Sharpen Your Pencil

This year we are consolidating communication and volunteer organization using a free bilingual tool called Pencil that can be easily accessed by smart phone, email or web. We believe it will reach the most parents possible and make it easy for parents to be involved and informed.

This Friday you should receive an emailed invitation to join a Pencil group for your child’s classroom. (Kindergarten parents will receive an invite to join a kindergarten group because those room assignments will not be made until after school starts.)

Pencil is made of communities—ours is Alvarado. Communities are made of groups—Alvarado’s will correspond to classrooms, committees, sports teams, and the like. Each group creates activities (snack sign-up, volunteer opportunities, etc.) and has a discussion board for its members.

Pencil will be adding a number of features this fall, including SMS support. They are very open to suggestions so let us (or them) know what you want to see improved.

We are not renewing our contract with SchoolPages (that money can go for translation), and we will phase out the school’s Yahoo listserv at the end of September. For now we will continue to send out the newsletter via Vertical Response and by paper to those who don’t have regular email access.

We will keep you updated, but if you have any questions, please feel free to reply to the list or contact the communications team directly, communications@alvaradoschool.net.
