College Bound Kickoff Event this Thursday
Alvarado parents are invited to attend the GreatSchools College Bound kickoff event this Thursday, February 23, from 5:30-7pm, in the cafeteria. There will be both Spanish and English sections. This program will run through June, and offers FREE resources, tips, and online content in English and Spanish for parents and guardians to support their children on the path to college. Free childcare and refreshments will be provided. Look for and return the RSVP slip in your child’s backpack. For more information, contact Ligia Montano at ligiamovi@gmail.com or 415-912-8643.

ELAC Meeting next Monday
The next ELAC meeting will be on Monday, February 27, from 2-3 pm, in room 20. Who speaks for the school's English learners? You do! Come and make your voice heard on topics such as:
The school and PTA budget for 2012-2013: What is the proper balance between programs that benefit all children, those for learners who are struggling, and those for advanced students? What programs are most important for English learners?
How students at Alvarado get reclassified as English proficient: We will follow up on our January conversation.
We will also be electing leaders for next year, so be sure to come and participate.

Principal Broecker Featured on the Teaching Channel
The Teaching Channel, a national non-profit that showcases videos on effective teaching practices, has posted a segment online about Alvarado's anti-bullying efforts. The video stars Principal Broecker, and many Alvarado parents can be seen in the audience. The 15-minute video is worthwhile not only because of the familiar faces you'll see while watching it, but also because its content provides insights and approaches for tackling the extremely important issue of school-yard bullying. View the video at http://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/bully-proof-your-child-become-a-solution-coach.
