Alvarado Community Healthy Food Bank
The Alvarado Community Healthy Food Bank solicits food donations from the Alvarado community, for distribution within the Alvarado community. Our food bank is administered by volunteer students, parents and staff, in partnership with the PTA’s Healthy Kids Committee. Our goals are:
- NOURISH: Make sure all our families have access to healthy foods, so our kids are well-nourished and ready to learn.
- COMMUNITY: Strengthen the Alvarado community by sharing with each other. This gives all our children the peace of mind that comes from knowing we can count on each other in times of need.
- EDUCATION: Support nutrition education, by getting the whole community talking and thinking about healthy foods
What and Where to Donate
You or your child should put your donations in the yellow box in Room 20. Students will screen the food to be sure it is fresh and healthy. Students also repackage bulk donations.
Where to Pick Up
Please visit Room 20 to pick up needed food from the metal shelves. You can also talk to Nancy Velasco (Spanish/English), 572-7020 or 695-5695, or Joanne Kapsack (English), 317-3373, about picking up food.
Involve Your Child!
Please donate dried black beans, pasta, healthy oils (canola, olive), white rice, low-sugar-whole-grain breakfast cereal, canned tuna fish, peanut butter, and fresh fruits and vegetables. All other fresh, healthy foods are very much appreciated and enjoyed: dried fruits, nuts, oatmeal, etc. We do not have a refrigerator.
You might like to let your child pick a healthy food that he or she enjoys, to donate to the families in the Alvarado community via our food bank. It can be a great chance to talk with your child about which foods are healthy, what a food bank is, and/or why you’ve decided to support the community in this way.
